Last night was spent at a friend's, catching up with those old friends and other old friends. Old. This home is owned by Jimm (of riversidenola.com fame) and his wife and they have a gaggle of chickens. A murder of chickens? A delicacy of chickens? Fine, a bunch of chickens.
Said chickens were dazed by the above freezing temperatures yesterday and alighted from their home, enraptured with the potential of their journey. Their path was a narrow footpath through the snow from their pen straight to the house. Chickens, not being known for their snow-fording ability, stuck to that path slavishly and ended up at the paths end, the house. But you see, chickens are also not the most motivated animals so this journey took them all day. By the time the house was reached they were stuck in the dark. And chickens don't move in the dark. Because chickens know the dark contains the KRAKEN! Ahem.
So the chickens took their place on the porch railing, waiting for their people to return them to their home. In the mean time I took many, many pictures of the Rooster and his charges. They are cool looking little animals but the eyes are astonishingly reptilian. There isn't much going on behind there that doesn't involve food or fight-or-flight. But their combs are colorful, they provide eggs and McNuggets, so we'll forgive them.
And, again, these pics are why I really love my Panasonic GF1. It was in my pocket when I showed up at the house. Yes, it doesn't do the low light as well as my Canon but my Canon is too big to carry with me. As these micro four thirds cameras get better (and do take note of the G2 announcement from today) the compromises will become less and less. And this is good.
